Cape Lookout Lighthouse

Cape Lookout Lighthouse was lit 1 November 1859. It was not the original lighthouse, but a second chance to make it a success as one of the lighthouses of North Carolina.

The first trial was plagued with problems including the fact that it was too short to help sailors and have a light too dim to see the bad weather, when most needed.

Many of the North Carolina lighthouses along the Outer Banks were converted for one reason or another, and Cape Lookout was one of them. This one was an example that the rest would eventually follow.

The new lighthouse stands 163 feet high, where the original was only 96 feet high.

Sixty-seven feet made a big difference in how he was able to make it work!

It was rebuilt a strong bright light was visible for seven miles pm, even in the worst rain storms.

You know that Cape Lookout Tower diamonds for her black and white mark that was originally intended for the other headlight!

Yes, you guessed it! Diamonds were calculated at Cape Hatteras Lighthouse to warn of Diamond Shoals.

If things had gone according to plan, you will look for a lighthouse at Cape Lookout with spiral bands of black and white.

Most of the lighthouses along the Outer Banks has been designed so that the light was again out of sight will soon enter into a new scene.

It was many a little, that the North Carolina lighthouses were built, trying to keep sailors safe and warn them of danger along the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

Although the Cape Lookout Lighthouse is considered almost perfect design, there is a defect that has not yet been repaired. When it was built, the stairwell was not properly attached to the side of the wall and tend to be lower with the necessary repairs often. So today, this lighthouse is not open to the public.

Certainly it would be nice to go and admire the beautiful view!

Beauty and the lighthouse at Cape Lookout Beach makes this a must see nothing in North Carolina vacation, and a good vacation spot to visit.
